Vandore Prepares
Breathing heavily, Vandore looked towards the Citadel. He noticed more shapes moving in the distance and knew that he had to keep going. He mustered what reserves he had and started towards the Citadel at a fast jog. The next two hours were spent in a game of cat and mouse. Fortunately, Vandore's training and his abilities were superb. Once he was within a half mile of the Citadel the unliving disappeared back into the desert. As the unliving left view, Vandore collapsed. He thought to himself, how ironic that he made it through impossible obstacles only to die within shouting distance of "home". Closing his eyes he prepared to accept the inevitable and unceremoniously fell unconscious.
His eyes slowly opened sometime later. His vision was initially blurry but gradually cleared and revealed a bed, a small Essence device, and an Atune healer. "Where am I," Vandore asked the healer. The Atune jumped at his question startled by his sudden awakening.
"Perhaps I had better answer that," came a lower, stern voice from out of his field of vision. Vandore slowly turned his head and found one of his teachers standing near. Mentar was a large man with rough features. He would have been considered handsome by some were it not for the ugly scar that marked his face from his left ear to the corner of his mouth. In his prime, Mentar was one of the greatest Defenders that Zenfar had ever known. "You are in the hospital at the Citadel. You showed exceptional courage and skills to have survived."
"But where are the others," asked Vandore concerned.
"I am afraid you were the only one to return," replied Mentar with great sadness. "The unliving that assaulted you were not part of the training. They were the result of a great menace that has returned to Zenfar. Unfortunately they caught your peers by surprise. You are all that is left to us and once you are healed the safety of Zenfar will rest on your shoulders."
Vandore lay there stunned by Mentar's words. He was in disbelief that all his friends could be dead. How could this have happened? Who could have done this?
Before leaving Mentar said, "Rest easy for now. The day for battle is coming. You will be ready to meet the challenge because you must. There is greatness in you Vandore, it must be allowed to emerge. Come see me when you are healed and I will tell you more." With that Mentar left Vandore alone to brood over the recent event. Vandore could not help but wonder if life on Zenfar would ever be the same again.
